It is now 11.30pm, and before going home to watch, I hope, some spectacular Northern lights display and enjoy a glass or two of Madiran, I thought about dropping you a wee line since I haven’t see you for a while. Madiran? At La Garrigue? Don’t worry I haven’t changed my wine selection policy , it is just some left over wine from the South-West of France dinner we had tonight, the first stage, or prelude of our Gastronomique Tour De France events.
It was wonderful to see so many familiar faces again and catch up with some “old “ Friends. Judging by the smiling faces leaving the restaurant it was a pleasant evening for all ; the food was very nice indeed, especially the oysters and the wines were superb and intriguing, especially the Mauzac. My thanks goes to Simon from Henri’s the famous Edinburgh delicatessen of Morningside and Stockbridge. His wine selection, available at the shop, was fantastic and Simon’s enthusiasm and knowledge about French wine and products quite extraordinary. Thank you for your help and advice Simon!
Our next” Tour De France” event on the 30th of April will take us to Corsica , “L’ile de beaute” as we call it. I am in the process of sourcing some special wines, cheeses and an indigenous breed of veal unique to the island. This is taking a bit of hard work and I may have to go there myself before the event just to make sure!! Does anybody want to join me?
Before this however, on the 27th of March, we will have a day in Faugere; a celebration of this small but perfectly formed appellation. The day will be hosted by Monsieur Lits , Faugere’s sommelier extraordinaire!! What Monsieur Lits does not know about Faugere’s wines could be written in the back of a stamp! Lunch on the 27th will include a tasting of a few of the selected wines then in the afternoon, from 2.30pm to 5pm Monsieur Lits will chair a running wine tasting for amateurs and professionals. In the evening a five course dinner, hosted by Mr Lits, with matching wines will be served in the traditional La Garrigue way . The menu will be published soon but this promises to be quite an event ! Unfortunately spaces are limited to 30 so please do not leave it too late before reserving your table. I heard a rumour that a special price will be given on the night.....
Jeffrey Street is having a few changes; some good, some sad! The good one was the recent opening of Urbane Art Gallery, with some really interesting displays of international modern art. Welcome to the street Tracey and Good Luck!
The sad news is the closure of Iggs, the Spanish restaurant institution. The “Street” and Edinburgh are losing one of its most charismatic’s restaurateurs, but after so many years this self appointed Spanish Ambassador is entitled to a wee rest, good bye and good luck Iggy , I will miss the scent of Tapas when walking by....
It looks like La Garrigue is now settled in the top 50’s of Trip Advisor Edinburgh restaurants, so please keep on writing your reviews, and I will try to answer as many of them as possible..and thank you for your support and for getting us there in the first place ! Your comments are important to us...well the good ones anyway !
And on the same subject...A couple of years ago you were kind enough to vote for La Garrigue in the Good Food Guide Award , well if you think that we are worthy enough to be nominated this time around please send your votes to www.thegoodfoodguide.co.uk Thanks for your support .
You may have noticed that I have not mentioned rugby.....I am just getting a bit cautious and waiting until later on next Saturday.....considering what the Welsh can achieve on a diet of daffodils and leeks, I wonder what porridge can do to this Scottish guys!
Finally, congratulations to Dan Cowley the winner of this month's dinner for two including a bottle of house wine.
Now , what about those northern lights....see you soon, the 27th of March...? I hope before.
